Struggling to leave teaching and get an interview?

Going a mile wide and an inch deep isn't helping you land the job you want.

Going a mile wide and an inch deep in your transition out of teaching is not the solution. I talk with many teachers very early on in their career change journey.
Their current status looks like this:

👎 they are still in the classroom,
👎 they are sponsoring an extracurricular (for almost no pay and high hour commitment),
👎 they know they want out of teaching,
👎 they are not sure when they can leave and reluctantly are planning to stay,
👎 they’ve applied to 30+ jobs online and heard back from almost none, with no forward movement on anything.

Problem 1 with the above – online applying.

ATS (Applicant Tracking Systems) used by Indeed, LI, Monster, and the like reject teacher resumes.  Not enough of the resume matches the auto-rules of the posting and the AI scan will kick out the resume before a human ever knew it was uploaded.

Problem 2, they tell me they can do this job, this job, or that job.

My responses is, yes, I’m sure you *can* but is approaching the application process like that working out for you? The answer is always no.

So, when do you cast a wide net and when do you maniacally focus?

You cast a wide net when doing research:
✅ What problem do you want to help solve? This tells you the industry you should work in.
✅ How do you want to go about solving this problem?  That tells you the company type.
✅ Do you want to wear many hats or get to go deep in one area? Company size.
✅ What tasks do you want to own and influence?  That tells you role.
✅ Did you self reflect?  Do you know your Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities?
✅ Can you list what tasks energize you and what drains you?
✅ Can you write your future goal as a SMART goal so you stay on target?

Once you can answer those questions, then get maniacally focused:

1️⃣ Save LinkedIn job search criteria for this more narrow focus.  When a new job hits, go after it immediately.
2️⃣ Target your networking efforts to events (in person and virtual)  that support your next move. Customize your outreach to companies and recruiters that support your next move.
3️⃣ Join professional groups that focus on your role and industry so you can learn and surround yourself with applicable conversations and professionals who are sharing about the job you want.

And it doesn’t happen overnight.  Professional persistence is mandatory to keep up with your outreach and TALKING to someone at the company where the job is you want.  That easy upload/online application?  That alone will not get you a second look (I’m sorry to say).
